    Has aromas and flavors which can only be achieved through “hang time” – a technique which chances the loss of crop if early winter sets in. Leaving the fruit to “hang” on the vine unusually long develops suppleness, increases color, and matures the tannins of the grapes. The wines are abundant in textural tannins yet soft as velvet. Crop thinning, allowing measured sunlight to reach the vine’s fruit zone, and waiting for increased ripeness are all part of our viticultural practices.

  • The features of this vintage are balance, complexity, and aromatic intensity. The typical richness of flavor and the inevitable elegance are evocative of tradition. It is a particularly rich, mature and deep Amarone also in virtue of the extraordinary climate of the vintage. It has an intense color with ruby-red highlights. Appealing on the nose, with hints of red fruit, prunes, and sweet spices such as cloves and cinnamon. The licorice, box hedge, thyme and nutty overtones develop later. It is caressing on the palate for the supple and elegant tannins, which add structure to the wine.

This scrutiny carries through the blending process and certain lots will not be included in the final Opus One blend. Yet, when these lots are afforded additional time in barrel along with the added flexibility of blending across multiple vintages, the final wine achieves a remarkable elegance and complexity.

Our 2006 Napa Valley, a blend of wine from vineyards throughout the appellation, is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. We blended the vineyard lots in early 2007 and transferred the wine to 100% new American oak barrels for aging. Blending prior to barreling allows us to achieve a balance of the wine s primary elements, such as fruit and tannin, before they are influenced by oak. The wine was then aged in barrel for approximately 25 months and another 20 months in bottle to harmonize its components before release.
